Compact SUV Sales in April 2025 – Creta, Vitara, Seltos, Hyryder Lead the Segment

Compact SUV Sales April 2025 – Creta Dominates, EVs Gain Traction

Hyundai continues to lead the compact SUV segment with the Creta and its EV variant collectively securing a 39.65% market share in April 2025. Compact SUVs, typically measuring between 4.2 to 4.4 meters, experienced notable year-on-year (YoY) growth, although month-on-month (MoM) sales declined sharply.

Segment Overview: Growth vs Decline

In April 2025, total compact SUV sales stood at 42,919 units, marking an 8.03% YoY growth over 39,727 units sold in April 2024. However, this also represents a significant 16.53% drop compared to 51,416 units sold in March 2025.

The segment continues to evolve with new models like the Tata Curvv/EV, Mahindra BE6, and Citroen Basalt entering the fray. Increasing emphasis on advanced features, updated powertrains, and compliance with stricter safety norms is keeping the segment competitive and appealing to buyers.

  • Hyundai Creta (ICE + EV) remained the segment leader with 17,016 units sold, up 10.16% from 15,447 units in April 2024. It was also the best-selling car overall in India last month. A hybrid variant is in development for launch in 2027.
  • Maruti Grand Vitara came in second with 7,154 units, reflecting a 6.06% decline YoY.
  • Kia Seltos followed with 6,135 units, down 8.90% compared to April 2024.

April 2025 Compact SUV Sales – MoM Trends

Sales slowed across most models on a MoM basis, with only a few EVs showing positive growth:

  • Hyundai Creta/EV fell 5.78% from March 2025.

  • MG ZS EV posted a slight 0.93% MoM gain, rising to 864 units from 856.
  • Mahindra XUV400 EV showed a strong 41.60% increase, with 337 units, up from 238 in March — a 99-unit gain.
  • MG Astor fell 27.72%, while Citroen Basalt and C3 Aircross declined by 34% and 100%, respectively.

Electric SUVs: A Bright Spot

Among a generally declining MoM performance, electric SUVs stood out. Both the MG ZS EV and Mahindra XUV400 EV managed to grow in sales, suggesting growing consumer interest in electric mobility within the compact SUV segment.

Conclusion

While Hyundai Creta remains the undisputed leader in the compact SUV space, increasing competition from new entrants and EVs is reshaping the landscape. The YoY growth signals strong consumer demand, but the MoM decline may reflect seasonal trends, inventory adjustments, or buyer caution ahead of future launches.
