BMW to Introduce New AWD Variant of the BMW M2

BMW is set to introduce a new xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant of the M2 Coupe. Currently, the M2 is the only model in BMW’s M line-up that remains purely rear-wheel drive (RWD), while the BMW M3, BMW M4 and BMW M5 all come equipped with AWD as standard.

M2 AWD: More Power, Faster Acceleration

The upcoming M2 xDrive was recently referenced on BMW’s US website as a separate variant from the existing RWD model. It is expected to use the same 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol straight-six engine as the standard M2. However, reports suggest a potential 50hp increase in output, taking total power to around 530hp — similar to the 2025 M2 CS — to compensate for the additional weight of the AWD system.

With the addition of the front transaxle, kerb weight could rise to approximately 1,800kg. Despite the extra mass, the improved traction from the AWD setup is expected to help the M2 xDrive achieve a 0-100kph sprint time of under 4 seconds.

Gearbox Details

Unlike the RWD M2, which is offered with both a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic transmission, the AWD variant will be available exclusively with the 8-speed automatic gearbox. This move aligns the M2 xDrive more closely with the rest of BMW’s M range, which no longer offers manual transmission options.

Will Be Sold Alongside RWD Model

BMW is expected to sell the M2 xDrive alongside the existing rear-wheel-drive version, giving buyers the choice between a purist RWD experience and enhanced all-weather performance with AWD.

More details, including official performance figures and launch timelines, are likely to be revealed soon.
