EV Sales Surge 77% in 2025 to Record High; Tata Motors Still Leads as MG and Mahindra Close In

India’s electric passenger vehicle (EV) market had its best year ever in 2025, with sales jumping 77 percent year-on-year to an all-time high of 1.76 lakh units. Strong demand for electric SUVs and MPVs, a flood of new model launches, and wider buyer acceptance helped EVs outperform 2024 by a massive margin—even as competition intensified across price bands.

According to Vahan data (as of January 2, 2026), EV volumes rose by 76,845 units compared to last year. Luxury EVs also saw healthy growth, while the mass market continued to drive the bulk of volumes.

Monthly EV Sales in India: 2025 vs 2024

One of the standout trends in 2025 was consistent month-on-month momentum. EV sales crossed the 11,000-unit mark in 11 out of 12 months, peaking at a record 19,161 units in October.

Despite softer demand toward year-end—partly due to GST cuts on ICE vehicles—EV sales remained far ahead of 2024 levels.

Carmaker-wise Performance Highlights

1. Tata Motors: Leader, but Market Share Slips

Tata Motors retained the top spot with 70,004 EVs sold, up 13 percent YoY. However, its market share dropped sharply to 40 percent, down from 62 percent in 2024.

Models like the Nexon EV, Tiago EV and Punch EV continued to drive volumes, while the Harrier EV added incremental demand. Rising competition, however, diluted Tata’s dominance.

2. JSW MG Motor: Rapid Climb to Second Place

JSW MG Motor posted one of the strongest growth stories of 2025, with sales surging 136 percent to 51,387 units.

The Windsor EV emerged as the brand’s biggest volume driver, while premium models like the M9 and Cyberster expanded MG’s footprint. MG also crossed 1 lakh cumulative EV sales in India during the year.

3. Mahindra: Breakout Year

Mahindra jumped to third place with 33,513 units, marking a massive 369 percent YoY growth.

The launch of born-electric SUVs BE 6 and XEV 9e proved to be game-changers. Mahindra further expanded its lineup with the XEV 9S, India’s first mass-market three-row electric SUV, offered with up to 79kWh battery options.

4. Hyundai: Creta Electric Lifts Volumes

Hyundai climbed to fourth place after launching the Creta Electric, which helped EV sales jump 637 percent to 6,726 units.

While the electric Creta hasn’t matched the runaway success of its ICE counterpart, Hyundai’s EV market share still rose to nearly 4 percent.

5. BYD: Quiet but Steady Growth

BYD sold 5,402 EVs, up 88 percent YoY. Despite limited localisation and CBU imports, models like the Atto 3, Seal, eMax7, and Sealion 7 found steady demand.

Luxury EV Sales Hit a New High

Luxury EV volumes grew 78 percent in 2025 to 5,116 units, making it the segment’s best year so far.

  • Mercedes-Benz followed with 1,168 units

  • Tesla entered the market and sold 255 units of the Model Y

  • Rolls-Royce saw increased demand for the Spectre EV

Brands like Volvo, Audi and Porsche recorded mixed results, while JLR’s EV volumes remained flat.

Why EV Sales Grew So Strongly in 2025

  • Wider choice across price segments

  • Strong demand for electric SUVs and MPVs

  • Improved charging infrastructure

  • Rising fuel costs pushing buyers toward EVs

  • Increased confidence in battery tech and range

EVs also accounted for over 40 percent of all new car launches in 2025, underlining the industry’s rapid shift toward electrification.
