Tata Motors crosses 2.5 lakh EV sales milestone in India

Tata Motors has reached an important milestone in India’s electric vehicle journey, crossing cumulative sales of 2.5 lakh EVs. The achievement comes just a few years after the company launched the Nexon EV in early 2020, a model that played a key role in bringing electric cars into the mainstream. With this, Tata Motors has become the first carmaker in India to cross 2,50,000 EV sales, strengthening its leadership in the growing electric vehicle market.

A major highlight of this journey is the Tata Nexon EV. It has become the first electric car in India to cross 1 lakh units in cumulative sales, accounting for around 40 percent of Tata’s total EV volumes. The Nexon EV reached the 50,000-sales mark in June 2023 and saw faster adoption after its facelift in September 2023, which introduced noticeable design changes, better features, and technical upgrades. Currently, the Nexon EV is priced between Rs 12.49 lakh and Rs 17.49 lakh, ex-showroom.

Tata Motors’ success in the EV space is also driven by its wide electric portfolio. The company currently offers six electric models, covering everything from entry-level hatchbacks to more premium SUVs. The range starts with the Tiago.ev, priced from around Rs 8 lakh, making it one of the most affordable electric cars in India. The Tigor.ev caters to both private and fleet buyers, while the Punch.ev strengthens Tata’s presence in the compact EV segment. For buyers looking at higher-end electric SUVs, the Curvv.ev and Harrier.ev complete the line-up. This broad spread across segments has helped Tata reach different types of customers.

Another key factor behind Tata’s EV sales milestone is its focus on localisation. Over 50 percent of the components used in Tata EVs are locally sourced, including power electronics and thermal management systems. Interestingly, the company says that more than 26 percent of its EV customers are first-time car buyers, and 84 percent use their electric vehicle as their primary car, showing growing confidence in EVs.

Supporting this adoption is Tata’s charging ecosystem, one of the largest in the country. Tata Motors claims to have access to over 2 lakh charging points across India, including home, community, and public chargers. This network also includes around 100 MegaCharger hubs on major highways, offering fast charging speeds of up to 120kW. Looking ahead, Tata plans to expand public charging points to 30,000 by 2027 and up to 1 lakh by the end of the decade.

With strong EV sales, a wide product range, and a growing charging network, Tata Motors continues to shape the future of electric mobility in India.
