Yamaha R2 India Launch in 2026: What to Expect

Yamaha India is gearing up for an exciting addition to its sportbike lineup with the launch of the Yamaha R2 in 2026. Following the massive success of the R15 since 2008, the R2 is set to offer riders a clear step up in performance while maintaining the practicality and reliability that Yamaha is known for.

The R2, codenamed 070, is expected to feature a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine around 200cc. While this isn’t a huge jump from the 155cc engine on the R15, it promises more power and torque, making it an ideal choice for riders looking to upgrade without moving to a high-displacement, harder-to-manage bike. Yamaha appears focused on balancing performance with good fuel efficiency, something that has always been appreciated by R15 owners.

Designed and developed entirely in India, the R2 will be manufactured at Yamaha’s Chennai facility. This move not only strengthens local production but also opens doors for potential exports to international markets. Despite the R2 launch, the R15 will continue to be sold alongside it, as it remains a popular choice among sportbike enthusiasts.

The Yamaha R2 will compete with bikes like the KTM RC 200 and the Hero Karizma XMR 210, offering riders a new option in the 200cc sportbike segment. Alongside the R2, Yamaha is likely to bring the NMax 155 scooter to India in 2026, expanding its urban mobility lineup.

For Yamaha fans, the R2 represents a well-rounded step up from the R15—offering more performance, a modern engine, and the same ease of use that makes Yamaha bikes a favourite in India. With the festive season around the corner, the R2 could be the ideal pick for riders looking to upgrade their sportbike experience.
