Hyundai has pulled the wraps off the Hyundai Crater Concept, a rugged-looking off-road SUV showcased at the LA Auto Show 2025. Positioned as the “next evolution” of the brand’s XRT series, the concept gives us a clearer idea of where Hyundai wants to take its future off-road-ready models. While the company hasn’t shared any powertrain details, the Crater serves as a design study that hints at Hyundai’s upcoming approach to tough, adventure-focused SUVs.
On the outside, the Hyundai Crater off-road SUV follows what the brand calls its “Art of Steel” design philosophy. The concept carries a simple, boxy shape with upright proportions, sharp lines and a strong, planted stance. The front end stands out with a 3D LED lighting strip placed at the base of the bonnet, featuring Hyundai’s familiar four-dot signature seen on its latest EV models. There’s also an enclosed grille and a tough-looking bumper fitted with recovery hooks, reinforcing its off-road character.
Hyundai hasn’t shied away from adding creative touches either. The bonnet includes rugged cables that stretch up to the roof rack, designed to help protect the windshield from branches or debris during off-road driving. The auxiliary lamps get a playful twist with small symbolic characters Hyundai calls “Crater Man,” adding some personality to the SUV.

From the side, things get even more interesting. The Crater Concept gets large, exaggerated wheel arches paired with 18-inch wheels wrapped in chunky 33-inch off-road tyres. Instead of regular mirrors, Hyundai has fitted removable camera units, which can also be used as flashlights when needed. The SUV features rear-hinged back doors and no traditional B-pillar, giving it a clean and futuristic profile.
The rear continues the rugged theme with a muscular bumper, bold haunches and lighting elements that echo the front design. Inside the cabin, the Crater looks straight out of science fiction. Highlights include a pillar-to-pillar HUD, cylindrical design elements and a centre touchscreen supported by four small displays showing more Crater Man symbols. As expected from an XRT-based model, the concept offers physical terrain mode buttons on the steering wheel.

Although the Hyundai Crater Concept is strictly a show vehicle, Hyundai has confirmed that a new off-road-ready SUV for India is in the works. It’s likely that some styling cues from the Crater will make their way into the production model.
