Nissan Motor Co. seems to be preparing a more structured approach for India, and a new SUV based on the Terrano PHEV concept could play an important role in that plan. After expanding its lineup with upcoming models like the Tekton and its three-row version, the company is now looking beyond rebadged products and focusing on more distinct offerings.
At the Beijing Auto Show 2026, Nissan showcased the Terrano PHEV concept, which hints at a future SUV that could be considered for India. This concept is closely related to models developed under Nissan’s joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Corporation. The partnership, which has been in place since 2003, allows Nissan to tap into faster development cycles and cost-effective manufacturing.
The Terrano PHEV concept stands out because it is built on a ladder-frame platform, similar to the Nissan Frontier Pro and Dongfeng Z9 pick-ups. This gives it a more rugged foundation compared to typical monocoque SUVs. More importantly, it offers multiple powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid setup, which could be a first for Nissan in this segment. The company is believed to be particularly interested in bringing the PHEV version to India.
If launched, this SUV is likely to be positioned against established rivals like the Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster. That means it will need to offer a strong mix of performance, features, and pricing. Early expectations suggest a price point of around ₹40 lakh (ex-showroom), placing it in the premium SUV space.
One of the key advantages for Nissan is its access to a manufacturing base in India. Although it no longer holds a stake in the Chennai plant shared with Renault, it still has reserved production capacity. This could make local manufacturing of the new SUV more feasible, helping keep costs in check.
Overall, the Nissan Terrano PHEV-based SUV could mark a fresh direction for the brand in India. With a focus on modern technology, hybrid powertrains, and competitive pricing, it aligns well with current market expectations. While there is no confirmed launch timeline yet, reports suggest that if plans move smoothly, the SUV could arrive within the next two years.
