Volvo Cars has announced one of its biggest over-the-air (OTA) software updates to date. The update will reach around 2.5 million vehicles across 85 countries, covering models produced from 2020 onwards that come with Google built-in technology.
This new update introduces a redesigned infotainment interface called Volvo Car UX, aimed at making the in-car system easier and more convenient to use. The company says the updated layout reduces the number of steps required to access commonly used features, helping drivers interact with the touchscreen more efficiently while on the move.
The system is based on Android Automotive OS, which allows deeper integration with Google services. Popular functions such as navigation, media controls, and phone connectivity will now appear directly on the home screen. This means drivers can quickly switch between apps like Google Maps without needing to exit the current screen.
Another key addition is a contextual shortcut bar that dynamically displays frequently used apps and relevant functions. For example, when the vehicle is moving at low speeds, a shortcut for the exterior camera will appear to help with parking and manoeuvring.
Owners of plug-in hybrid models will also benefit from improved accessibility to drive modes. The Pure electric mode can now be selected directly from the home screen, making it easier for drivers to switch to electric driving when needed.
Volvo says this update will create a more consistent user experience across its vehicle lineup. Older models such as the Volvo XC40 will now share a similar interface design with newer models like the Volvo EX90.
The software upgrade will be delivered free of charge to eligible vehicles. It also prepares compatible cars for Google Gemini-based conversational AI, which Volvo plans to introduce later this year.
