BMW i3 electric sedan unveiled with up to 900km range

BMW has revealed the all-new i3 electric sedan, marking the return of a familiar name in a completely new form. Unlike the earlier i3 hatchback sold between 2013 and 2022, this new model is a full-size sedan and also gives us a preview of the next-generation 3 Series.

The new i3 is closely related to the BMW iX3 and is built on the brand’s latest Neue Klasse platform. In terms of design, it follows a clean and modern approach while still holding on to some classic BMW styling cues. The front gets slim headlight elements with distinctive LED detailing, along with a sculpted bumper that adds a sporty touch. From the side, the sedan keeps a more traditional three-box shape, which BMW describes as a ‘2.5-box’ design, rather than going for a coupe-like silhouette.

At the rear, the styling remains minimal, with sleek LED tail-lamps and subtle gloss-black elements. The overall proportions look balanced, and the dimensions suggest a proper midsize sedan with a strong road presence.

Inside, the cabin takes a tech-focused direction. The highlight is a large 17.9-inch touchscreen paired with BMW’s Panoramic Vision display that stretches across the dashboard. This setup replaces the conventional instrument cluster and gives the interior a clean, uncluttered look. Physical buttons are limited, with most controls integrated into the digital interface. Features include powered seats, ambient lighting, wireless charging, and Level 2 ADAS, along with a new AI-based assistant.

Under the skin, the i3 comes with a dual-motor setup in its 50 xDrive version. It produces 469hp and 645Nm, offering strong performance for a sedan in this segment. The battery pack is expected to be around 108.7kWh, delivering a claimed WLTP range of up to 900km, which is quite impressive.

Charging is another strong point. With support for up to 400kW DC fast charging, the i3 can add around 400km of range in just 10 minutes under ideal conditions. It also supports AC charging up to 22kW.

Production is set to begin in August 2026 at BMW’s Munich plant, with global deliveries expected later in the year. While there is no confirmation yet for India, the brand’s growing EV lineup suggests it could be considered in the future.
