Kia Carens Clavis EV to Debut on July 15 – Set to Become India’s First 7-Seater Electric MPV
Kia is gearing up to strengthen its position in India’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle market with the launch of the Carens Clavis EV, scheduled for July 15. Positioned as the country’s first 7-seater electric MPV, the Carens Clavis EV is expected to enjoy a significant first-mover advantage in its segment.
Part of Kia’s Growth Strategy
With India’s auto industry growing at a brisk pace, Kia aims to increase its market share into double digits. Earlier this year, Kia launched the Syros SUV in February, followed by the Carens Clavis MPV in May. Now, the electric version will further broaden its portfolio and appeal to buyers seeking spacious, eco-friendly family vehicles.
Shared Powertrain with Creta Electric
To keep costs in check, the Carens Clavis EV is likely to share its powertrain with the upcoming Hyundai Creta Electric. If so, it could come with two battery pack options:
- 42 kWh battery offering a certified range of about 390 km
- 51.4 kWh battery with a range of around 473 km (MIDC cycle)
Both versions would use a front-mounted electric motor, delivering 135 PS and 171 PS, respectively. Given the Carens Clavis EV’s larger size and weight, the real-world range might be slightly lower.
The EV is also expected to have a front-mounted charging port and support both AC and DC fast charging.
- Using an 11 kW AC fast charger, a 10% to 100% charge could take roughly 4 hours (42 kWh) and 4 hours 50 minutes (51.4 kWh)
- A 50 kW DC fast charger could recharge the battery from 10% to 80% in about 58 minutes
Advanced Features and Tech
The Carens Clavis EV is likely to include an ADAS-linked regenerative braking system, with paddle shifters to adjust regen levels. Other shared features with the Creta Electric could include:
- Rear AC vents
- Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality
Inside, many features are expected to be carried over from the ICE Carens Clavis, such as:
- Boss function for the front passenger seat
- Dual panoramic display
- 4-way power adjustable driver seat
- Front ventilated seats
- Smart air purifier
- BOSE 8-speaker premium audio system
Styling and Safety Highlights
Spy shots reveal the Carens Clavis EV will largely resemble its ICE sibling, featuring:
- Star Map LED DRLs with integrated turn signals
- Ice Cube MFR LED headlamps
- Star Map LED connected tail lamps
- Bold front and rear skid plates
- Unique aero-optimized alloy wheels to boost efficiency
Safety features are also comprehensive, including:
- Six airbags
- Electronic stability control (ESC)
- Hill-start assist control (HAC)
- Vehicle stability management (VSM)
- Downhill brake control (DBC)
- Brake assist system (BAS)
- All-wheel disc brakes
Additionally, the EV is expected to get a Level 2 ADAS suite offering around 20 autonomous safety and driver assistance features.
Expected Pricing and Future Plans
To attract buyers, Kia could price the Carens Clavis EV starting around ₹16–18 lakh (ex-showroom), making it an appealing option in the family EV segment.
Looking ahead, Kia plans to expand its electric lineup in India with potential EV versions of the Syros and Seltos, as well as global models like the Kia EV3 and EV5.
