Mercedes-Benz reveals VLE electric van with over 700km range

Mercedes-Benz VLE has been officially revealed by Mercedes-Benz, marking a new step in the brand’s electric people-mover strategy. The VLE is derived from the Mercedes Vision V concept and will sit below the more premium VLS model that is expected to debut later this year.

The VLE will be offered in both standard and long-wheelbase versions. Buyers will also get multiple trims to choose from, including AMG Line, AMG Line Plus and Exclusive variants. Designed as a luxury electric van for families and business users, the VLE can seat up to eight passengers with flexible seating arrangements.

Built on a new electric platform

The VLE is the first vehicle built on Mercedes’ new VAN.EA architecture, which will support the company’s upcoming electric vans and MPVs. The initial variant will be the VLE 300, producing 276hp and offering a claimed range of more than 700km on the WLTP cycle. Power comes from a large 115kWh NMC battery pack.

Thanks to an 800-volt electrical system, fast charging is one of its highlights. Mercedes claims the VLE can add about 320km of range in just 15 minutes when connected to a high-speed charger.

A more powerful VLE 400 version will also be available. This model features all-wheel drive, 415hp and can accelerate from 0-100kph in around 6.5 seconds. At a later stage, Mercedes plans to introduce variants with a smaller 80kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery as well. Combustion engine versions based on the VAN.CA platform are also expected in the future.

The VLE comes with air suspension and rear-axle steering that allows up to seven degrees of movement. This helps achieve a turning circle of just 10.9 metres, which Mercedes says is similar to a compact sedan like the Mercedes-Benz CLA.

Sleek exterior design

The exterior design focuses on aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient of 0.25Cd. The front features a large grille that can be illuminated depending on the variant, along with a light bar connecting the headlights. The daytime running lights use star-shaped elements inspired by the Mercedes logo.

Other highlights include electric sliding doors with power windows, a fixed panoramic glass roof and wheel options ranging from 19 to 22 inches. At the rear, a full-width light strip forms an inverted U shape across the tailgate.

Spacious cabin with luxury features

Inside, the VLE offers seating for five to eight occupants. The rear seats can be completely removed to create up to 4,078 litres of luggage space. Interestingly, the seats use rollers so they can be moved easily when taken out.

Passengers also get several comfort options, including electrically adjustable seats with massage and lumbar support in higher variants. A large 31.3-inch retractable 8K display folds into the roof when not in use, while the dashboard features a wide Superscreen setup with three displays.

The van also comes with a 22-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system, over-the-air updates and multiple driver assistance systems supported by cameras, radars and ultrasonic sensors.

Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed a launch timeline for India yet. However, with the growing demand for luxury MPVs in the country, the VLE could become an interesting addition to the brand’s lineup in the future.
