Next-Gen Tata Harrier and Safari: Bigger, Smarter, and Likely to Get AWD

Tata Motors is gearing up for a generational upgrade of its popular Harrier and Safari SUVs in the coming years. While the official debut is still some time away, several details about their new platforms, engines, and tech have already surfaced online. Internally, the upcoming Harrier is codenamed Taurus, while the Safari carries the codename Leo. Here’s what we know so far.

All-New Flexible Platform

The next-gen Harrier and Safari will be built on a new flexible platform, reportedly similar to the one Mahindra plans to unveil on August 15, 2025. Currently, both SUVs use the Omega architecture, derived from Land Rover’s D8 platform. The shift to this new platform should make the upcoming models more modern, adaptable, and future-ready.

Bigger and More Spacious

Thanks to the new architecture, the overall length of the SUVs is expected to increase by around 100mm to 200mm. This change will likely translate to more cabin space and improved passenger comfort, addressing one of the key areas where customers look for upgrades in new generations.

Packed with Advanced Technology

In an interesting move, Tata Motors has collaborated with Desay SV Automotive, a China-based mobility technology company, to develop a next-generation electrical and electronic (E&E) architecture.
This new system will:

  • Support both ICE (petrol and diesel) and EV powertrains
  • Enable advanced infotainment systems
  • Integrate connected car features
  • Power ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems)

As a result, buyers can expect new autonomous driving features, improved software experience, and a sophisticated digital cockpit in the new Harrier and Safari.

First-Ever AWD Option

One of the most notable upgrades: the upcoming flexible platform will support an AWD (all-wheel drive) system. This marks a first for both the Harrier and Safari, which have so far been offered only in front-wheel drive (FWD) configurations. The addition of AWD should significantly enhance off-road capability and driving confidence.

New Petrol Engine and Upgraded Diesel

Under the hood, Tata Motors plans to introduce a new 1.5-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine, which is expected to debut around the 2025 festive season.
In addition, the next-gen models will continue with an upgraded version of the familiar 2.0-litre diesel engine. Tata recently acquired licensing rights to independently develop and enhance Fiat’s 2.0L diesel motor, which should help improve both performance and efficiency in the upcoming Harrier and Safari.
