Toyota is set to take a significant step in India’s electric vehicle market with the unveiling of its first all-electric SUV, the Urban Cruiser EV, tomorrow, 20 January 2026. This launch marks Toyota’s entry into the mainstream EV segment in the country, putting it in direct competition with models like the Hyundai Creta Electric and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki e Vitara.
The Urban Cruiser EV is closely based on the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, but Toyota has added its own design touches to both the exterior and interior, giving the SUV a distinct look. While the overall shape and layout remain familiar, small styling updates ensure it carries Toyota’s brand identity.
Under the hood, the SUV is expected to offer two LFP battery options. The smaller 48.8 kWh battery will produce around 142 bhp and 192.5 Nm of torque, while the larger 61.1 kWh battery is rated at about 172 bhp and the same torque. Both setups will use front-wheel-drive layouts and are claimed to deliver a range of up to 500 km on a single charge, making it practical for city and highway drives alike.
On the pricing front, Toyota is expected to position the Urban Cruiser EV between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom). This places it right in the middle of India’s growing electric SUV segment, offering buyers a chance to switch to electric without compromising on space or comfort.
With its combination of familiar design, competitive range, and practical performance, the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV could appeal to urban families looking for an electric SUV. The launch tomorrow will reveal more details, but Toyota’s move signals that it is serious about establishing a foothold in India’s fast-evolving EV market.
