Electric vehicle (EV) sales in India maintained strong momentum in the second quarter (Q2) of 2025, climbing to 530,386 units — an impressive 34% year-over-year (YoY) increase from 396,719 units sold in Q2 2024. EVs now represent 8% of India’s total automobile sales, which reached 6,554,775 units in the quarter, as per data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Vahan Dashboard).

This growth takes the country’s cumulative registered EVs to over 6.44 million, highlighting rising consumer acceptance and expanding product portfolios across segments.

🏭 Policy Support Driving Momentum

In parallel with strong sales, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) launched a new application portal under its scheme to promote local manufacturing of electric passenger cars. Interested global and domestic players must invest at least ₹41.5 billion (~$486 million) within three years from approval to set up EV production facilities.

Additionally, under the PM E-Drive program, MHI has mandated 100% domestic content for 18 EV components in two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and e-buses to qualify for subsidies — further strengthening the local EV ecosystem.
