Tesla Launches Model Y in India, Expands with Superchargers and Delhi Experience Centre

Tesla Enters India with Model Y; First Experience Centre Opens in Mumbai

Tesla, the electric vehicle giant led by Elon Musk, has officially made its entry into the Indian market. On Tuesday, the company inaugurated its first Tesla Experience Centre at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. This marks the beginning of Tesla’s retail presence in India, with a second Experience Centre planned for Delhi in the coming months.

Model Y Launch: Variants and Pricing

The first offering from Tesla in India is the Model Y, which will be available in two variants:

  • Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): ₹59.89 lakh, with a WLTP range of 500 km
  • Long-Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD): ₹67.89 lakh, with a WLTP range of 622 km

Registrations are open in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram, and bookings can be made directly via Tesla’s website. Deliveries for the RWD variant are scheduled to begin in the July–September 2025 quarter, while the long-range variant will follow in the October–December period.

Performance Specs

  • Top Speed: 201 km/h
  • 0–100 km/h Acceleration:
    • 5.9 seconds (RWD)
    • 5.6 seconds (Long-Range AWD)

Charging Infrastructure Plans

To support its vehicles, Tesla is also bringing its renowned charging infrastructure to India. According to Isabel Fan, Regional Director at Tesla, the company’s success globally stems not only from its vehicles but also its advanced charging technology.

Globally, Tesla operates 7,000+ charging stations with over 70,000 superchargers.

In Mumbai, Tesla will install four supercharging stations at:

  • BKC
  • Lower Parel
  • Thane
  • Navi Mumbai

Each location will house 16 Superchargers. In addition, 16 destination chargers will be installed at hotels, malls, and commercial spaces.

A similar rollout is planned for Delhi, with:

  • 4 Superchargers
  • 15 Destination Chargers

Tesla Model Y customers in India will also receive a free fall (home) charger to make overnight charging convenient.

After-Sales and Service Support

Tesla is investing in local infrastructure, including:

  • After-sales service centres in Mumbai and Delhi
  • Expansion into logistics, delivery operations, and workplace charging solutions

“These steps are essential to building a strong Tesla community in India,” said Isabel Fan.

EV Market Landscape in India

While India’s EV market is growing, electric passenger vehicles (PVs) still represent a small share of the total market. According to FADA:

  • 41.53 lakh PVs were sold in FY 2024–25
  • EV penetration in PVs: 2.6% (up from 2.3% in 2023–24)
  • Overall EV penetration: 7.8% (up from 7.1%)

The Model Y, initially imported from Tesla’s Shanghai factory, comes at a premium due to import duties. However, with its brand appeal and feature-rich offering, Tesla is expected to attract affluent buyers and EV enthusiasts alike.
