I’m planning to upgrade to a petrol automatic (or hybrid) in the ₹18–25 lakh range. I want something that feels quick, has a smooth gearbox with no rubber-band effect, and is enjoyable to drive both in the city and on weekend trips. I’ve shortlisted the Hyundai Creta N Line DCT, MG Hector CVT, and the Honda Elevate, but I’m open to other options if they offer better performance and value. Which one should I pick?

If performance is high on your list, the Hyundai Creta N Line DCT is the most rewarding of the three. The turbo-petrol engine pairs well with the dual-clutch gearbox, and it delivers strong mid-range punch without any of the “stretchy” feel you get from CVTs. It’s the most enthusiastic and driver-focused option here.
The MG Hector, even with the CVT, isn’t built for spirited driving. It’s comfortable and spacious, but the CVT tuning and the SUV’s higher weight take away from performance. The Honda Elevate is smooth and predictable, but again, the CVT limits how responsive it feels when you push it.
If you want something even more enjoyable than these, consider the Skoda Slavia 1.5 TSI or Volkswagen Virtus 1.5 TSI. They’re sedans, but with surprisingly good ground clearance, fantastic driving dynamics, and a brilliant 1.5-litre turbo engine that’s easily the quickest and most engaging in this segment. They are practical, well-equipped, and far more fun than most midsize SUVs.
For pure performance and a fun automatic, go with the Creta N Line DCT.
If you want the most exciting engine-gearbox combo overall, the Slavia/Virtus 1.5 TSI pair are even better.
