Tata Sierra Review 2026: Design, Features, Engines & Verdict

The Tata Sierra is one of the most eagerly awaited SUVs in recent years, and with good reason. An iconic name from the 1990s has returned, but this time on an all-new platform, with new engines, modern tech and a clear brief: take on today’s highly competitive midsize SUV segment, dominated by the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. After driving multiple versions of the new Sierra, here’s a clear look at what it gets right—and where it still has room to improve.

Design & Engineering: Modern Yet Familiar

The new Sierra manages something tricky: it looks futuristic while still reminding you of the original. The upright stance, boxy proportions and blacked-out rear glass are clear throwbacks, while elements like LED light bars, slim headlamps, flush door handles and 19-inch alloys firmly place it in 2026.

Built on Tata’s new ARGOS (All-Terrain Ready, Omni-Energy, Geometry Scalable) platform, the Sierra is future-proofed for multiple powertrains. For now, it’s front-wheel drive, but the architecture supports petrol, diesel, CNG, hybrid and even AWD setups.

Dimensionally, it stands out:

  • One of the tallest and widest midsize SUVs

  • Longest wheelbase in the segment

This translates directly into interior space and road presence.

Interior Space & Comfort: Tata’s Best Cabin Yet

Step inside, and it’s immediately clear Tata has raised its game. The fit, finish and material quality feel a notch above what we’ve seen before. The dashboard design is clean and modern, and visibility is excellent thanks to the low-set dash.

Highlights include:

  • Three-screen layout on higher variants (instrument cluster, infotainment, passenger display)

  • New premium-feeling control stalks and switches

  • Well-designed centre console with storage, wireless charging and armrest

Seat comfort is a strong point. The front seats get extendable under-thigh support, a segment-first, while the rear offers generous legroom, a reclining backrest, sunshades, AC vents and even a “boss mode” function.

Boot space is practical too:

  • 450 litres till the parcel shelf

  • Over 1,200 litres with rear seats folded

Features & Safety: Fully Loaded

Tata hasn’t held back on equipment. The top-spec Sierra is packed with features buyers now expect in this class.

Key highlights include:

  • Ventilated front seats and powered driver seat

  • Panoramic sunroof

  • Wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay

  • Dual-zone climate control

  • 12-speaker JBL Black sound system with Dolby Atmos

  • 360-degree camera

  • Full ADAS suite (AEB, adaptive cruise, lane assist, cross-traffic alert)

Safety is comprehensive, with six airbags standard, ESC, traction control and disc brakes all around. While official NCAP results are awaited, Tata says the Sierra is engineered for a 5-star rating.

Engine Options & Performance

The Sierra is offered with three engines:

EngineOutputGearbox
1.5L NA petrol106hp / 145NmMT / DCT
1.5L turbo-petrol (Hyperion)160hp / 255Nm6-speed AT
1.5L diesel118hp / up to 280NmMT / AT

The turbo-petrol automatic is the standout. It’s refined, quick and smooth, with minimal turbo lag and strong real-world performance. The Aisin torque-converter gearbox isn’t sporty, but it’s extremely smooth and well-calibrated.

The diesel, while efficient and relaxed on highways, is noticeably noisier and lacks the punchy mid-range many diesel buyers expect.

Ride, Handling & Comfort

Ride quality is one of the Sierra’s biggest strengths. Thanks to frequency-dependent dampers, it handles broken roads confidently while remaining stable at speed. Body roll is well controlled, steering is light and predictable, and grip levels are reassuring.

It’s not a hardcore off-roader, but with 205mm ground clearance and terrain modes (Normal, Wet, Rough), it can handle rough patches with ease.

Mileage

Official fuel efficiency figures are yet to be announced. Real-world tests are expected to follow, but early impressions suggest competitive numbers for the segment.

Price & Rivals

Tata Sierra prices (ex-showroom):

  • Petrol: from ₹11.49 lakh

  • Diesel: from ₹12.99 lakh

  • Turbo-petrol: from ₹17.99 lakh

  • Top variants nearing ₹20 lakh

Key rivals include:

  • Hyundai Creta

  • Kia Seltos

  • Maruti Grand Vitara

  • Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder

  • Honda Elevate

Verdict: Is the Tata Sierra Worth Buying?

The new Tata Sierra is a well-rounded, highly desirable midsize SUV. Its strengths—premium cabin, feature-rich variants, refined turbo-petrol engine and excellent ride quality—far outweigh its weaknesses. Yes, the diesel could be quieter and tyre noise better controlled, but these are not deal-breakers.

Add in the nostalgic design and strong road presence, and the Sierra feels like a genuine comeback story done right. Tata has not just revived a name—it has delivered a serious contender for the top of the segment.
