Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast has unveiled the second-generation VF8 electric SUV in its home market. The updated VF8 becomes the first model in the company’s line-up to receive a full generational update. Along with a fresh exterior and redesigned cabin, the new model also gets a revised powertrain setup and smaller overall dimensions compared to its predecessor.
The new VF8 now comes with a 60.13kWh battery pack paired with a front-mounted electric motor producing 228hp and 330Nm of torque. VinFast claims the SUV delivers a driving range of up to 500km on the NEDC cycle. The company also says the battery can be charged from 10 to 70 percent in less than 30 minutes.
Interestingly, the earlier VF8 used a much larger 87.7kWh battery pack and was available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. While the previous front-wheel-drive model produced 201hp and 310Nm, it offered a higher claimed range of 562km. This means the new model gets slightly better performance figures but a lower driving range.
On the design front, the second-generation VF8 looks sharper and more modern than before. The front section now features slimmer headlights with segmented eyebrow-shaped LED daytime running lamps connected by a V-shaped light bar. The grille area remains closed off, as expected from an EV, while the bumper gets blacked-out elements and air vents for cooling.
From the side, the SUV gets redesigned 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels and a rising window line, giving it a sportier appearance. At the rear, the VF8 continues with the brand’s signature V-shaped LED lighting design along with a contrasting black trim piece.
The updated VF8 is also smaller than the outgoing model. Its length has reduced by 49mm, width by 62mm and wheelbase by 110mm. However, ground clearance has increased slightly by 8mm.
Inside, the cabin has been completely redesigned. The SUV now gets a new 2-spoke steering wheel and a dedicated digital driver’s display. The infotainment screen is now smaller at 12.9 inches compared to the older 15.6-inch unit. Other features include dual-zone climate control with an air purifier, powered front seats, an 8-speaker audio system, a 360-degree camera and an ADAS suite.
The second-generation VF8 is priced at 999 million Vietnamese dong, which is around Rs 36.5 lakh before taxes. VinFast is unlikely to introduce this model in the Indian market anytime soon.
